UX Bristol 2017: “designing things well is not an argument anymore”
With only a few more days to go before UX Bristol 2017, it’s time to look at the schedule for the day and get excited about the seventh user experience (UX) design conference organised by the Bristol Usability Group. Once again, the organisers are promising a memorable day of UX workshops – a total of 12 – delivered by leading industry names.
The M Shed will host this year’s UX Bristol on 14th July, and the attendees can expect a truly user-centred day, with a special focus on new technology. Once again, co-founder James Chudley confirmed that half of the talks delivered by the speakers have been curated by the organising team over a long period of time, with the other half coming from open submissions.
“This year we’ve had more applicants than ever. More responses mean an even wider spread of topics to choose from, which gives us a programme with something for everyone. It’s not just about the workshops, I also see it as an excuse for the UX community to get together, it’s a great opportunity for people to catch up and learn new things”, says James Chudley.
“We don’t theme UX Bristol 2017 because that can be too restrictive – we prefer to make the event broader for everyone, so we get a great mix of workshops and attendees.”
With the users already at the centre of UX Bristol 2017, the event is also focusing on other topics like artificial intelligence (AI) and chatbots. Riding the wave of machine learning and AI, one of the event’s workshops is suitably titled ‘Let’s build a bot’, a hot topic in the industry at the moment.
“There are lots of impressive things happening thanks to big companies investing heavily in this area. Automation is fascinating, and it’s good to see UX people getting involved because it’s critical that these things are designed with people in mind.”
Looking back, James notices how much the user experience industry has changed in a positive way. “The argument for designing things well is not such an argument we need to have anymore. Thankfully, it’s not about having to justify an investment in design anymore, which has allowed us to really focus our time and efforts on improving our craft and sharing what we learn.” A change that has certainly been reflected in the popularity of events like UX Bristol.
This year’s event boasts 12 workshops, plus some lightning talks at the end of the day. And, of course, it wouldn’t be UX Bristol without the traditional cream tea! “Heads will roll if there’s no cream tea”, according to James, so if you’re attending the conference at the M Shed on 14th July, you are likely to get the full UX Bristol experience.
